WORDS

Everyday no matter where we are, people everyday have conversations where they use derogatory words between  their friends that they wouldn't usually use when talking to a stranger or when talking to an authority figure. But whats words are appropriate and what words are not appropriate?

After interviewing many people on campus for a VOX Pop style video about words, I received many different answers from many people expressing how they feel about Derogatory Words and which words they would use or would never use. (click the link to see the video!).

Many of the people I interviewed agreed that the use of derogatory words are inappropriate when used between strangers or people of a professional status. But on the other hand many of the people I interviewed   also agreed to saying that they believe that is it okay to use certain derogatory words between friends as long as they are not offended by the words that are used.

Certain words should never be used just for that simple reason that they are very offensive. Certain words have been a major topic of the discussion of derogatory words that has influenced many people even celebrities  to make PSA's (Personal Service Announcements) to raise awareness about specific words that are offensive and should never be used because they can be very insulting. For example, one specific campaign called Spread the Word to End the Word is a campaign to spread awareness about he word "retarded" being used negatively and being offensive to people with disabilities. Many celebrities have made PSA's to support the movement to Spread the Word to End the Word that has helped a lot to help stop the use of the word "retarded" and other words as well.

In my opinion I believe that in a no professional environment with friends that you are well acquainted with is an acceptable environment to use certain  words. But in professorial environments I would never use such words. On the other hand there are certain words that I would never use in a professional environment or an environment surround with friends because there are certain words that would be very offensive when said to certain people.

We should all be more cautious of the things that we say and understand what words are offensive and learn which words are not offensive. To see what the people around campus at my school, Winthrop University said about the use of derogatory words just click the link below.

Campus Dining at WU

Winthrop University’s Department of Food and Dining Services are a lot more important than what the everyday student, professor, or visitor actually knows. They are heating up their kitchens more now than ever to let more people know why Winthrop’s food department is the best there is.

Winthrop University, home of the Winthrop Eagles, located in Rock Hill, South Carolina is known for its amazing athletic and academic opportunities. Winthrop is also famous for is great location, just 30 minutes away from the exciting city of Charlotte, North Carolina where there are amazing shopping malls and the famous Carowinds family theme park. But what many people do not know is that there is so much more to Winthrop besides their great academics and location.

The university houses various departments that are available to the whole community of Winthrop, and was also created for the betterment of the school and its students. Such departments are, Residence Life, The Department of Disabilities Services, The Fine Arts Department, and The Department of Student Life and Organizations.  But one of the most important, yet over looked departments is Winthrop’s Food and Dining Services Department.

To the students, faculty, and the rest of the Winthrop community, the university offers various options for dining. Winthrop’s two main areas for dining are the Thompson Café located in Thompson Hall, and Markley’s at the Center located in the DiGiorgio Campus Center. These two places are where you will find most of the community of Winthrop enjoying their meals.

Thompson Café offers a buffet style choice of dining. They serve different meals everyday such as Chinese, Italian, and numerous southern dishes. The café also has a smaller buffet section called the Grab and Go where students can grab a quick bag lunch and head on their way instead of dining in.  Also located in Thompson Hall is small shop called Eagle Express, where students can purchase different sorts of grocery items.

Markley’s at the Center houses several different dining options, such as Popeyes Louisiana Chicken, Burger Studio, Garnet and Go; which is just a fast grab and go option for anyone in a hurry, and many other restaurants.
Thompson café, Markley’s at the Center, and Eagle Express aren't the only options for dining on campus. When in the DiGiorgio Campus Center, anyone can visit the campus’ very own Starbucks café or take a short walk to Subway in the basement of the Dinkins building.

Aside from learning more about the many on campus dining opportunities that Winthrop offers, I also talked to a few people who work in Thompson café, Markley’s, and students who eat in these places, and was able to hear from them more in depth about why they believe that Winthrop’s wide variety of dining options are some of the best and why it is so beneficial to the whole community of Winthrop.

VOX Pop Videos are Going Viral !

"When Was the Last Time?..."

Ever had just one specific question that you just need to be answered? Sometimes you may even need more than one answer because just one answer may not be good enough. What does one do in a situation like this? Well my answer would be to "VOX", or go and get my answers from the voice of the people.

All over the world VOX Pop videos have been swarming the internet. VOX Pop videos are videos of many different people answering just ONE main question. "What would you do if today was your last day on Earth?", "What is your favorite childhood memory?" Questions just like those. Sometimes the answers in these videos will make you cry and some will make you smile. Every answer is different in some type of way.

After watching numerous VOX Pop videos online, I became inspired to make my own. I sat around for a while thinking of one great question I could ask in my video. The question I came up with was, "When was the last time you cried and why?" I went around campus asking everyone the question that I came up with. A lot of people had very similar answers. Many were about deaths of loved ones, some were about silly things like a scene from a movie, while some people could not think of the last time they cried. I thought that my question would be great to ask the people on campus because it made everyone think long and hard. Not many people actually knew the last time they cried right off the top of their head. It took a lot of people some deep thought. All of the answers I got were great and came out even better after putting the whole video together.

The whole experience was great to be involved in because it was fun and really exciting to see everyone's reaction. But most importantly it was great to hear the voice of the people.

Lois Rhame West was a stand-out Winthrop student. She played field hockey, tennis, and golf. The building was named after he because of her amazing accomplishments for the school and her amazing efforts towards encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle, and her passion towards education and her love for Winthrop. One of the most exciting areas of the West Center that many people love is the huge climbing wall. The climbing wall is located right in the lobby of the West Center. It stretches an amazing height of 36 feet with both manual and auto belay systems.

The West Center is also home to Winthrop's 8-lane 25 yard pool with depths ranging from 4 to 13 feet. the pool serves for different purposes such as various instructional classes, fitness reasons, and is also open to the public throughout different times of the day.
